Single Car Crashes

Within Minutes
Two single vehicle traffic crashes occurred on the same road in about the same place within a quarter hour of each other. On March 20 at 10 a.m. on Route 620 south of Sperryville Hugh Michael Jolliffe of Culpeper failed to negotiate a left curve, ran off the right shoulder, veered back across to the left, then again to the right of the road where he struck a fence. The 1968 Ford Mustang he was driving was owned by Robert B. Rhoades of Locust Grove. The fence was on the farm of J. W. Fletcher.
Minutes later a 1965 Mustang operated by William Tyler Haywood of Charlottesville failed to negotiate the same curve, crashed through the fence and turned over in the field injuring two of its three occupants. The vehicle was owned by Samuel M i Johnson jr. of Charlottesville. | Injured were the driver, William Tyler Haywood who sustained a fractured right shoulder and Haden Lee Scruggs of Charlottesville who had a sprained back.
The operators of both of these vehicles were charged with reckless driving. Trooper J. B. Willis investigated these crashes.
