Clear Courts
Richmond, Va. . . A total of 226,682 arrests by the State Police cleared the courts during 1970, Colonel H. W. Burgess, the Department’s Superintendent, reported today. Colonel Burgess noted that 96.5 percent, or 218,758, involved the highway and that 94.9 percent, or 215,302, were for direct traffic violations. The overall conviction rate was 91.9 percent.
He gave as an example of an offense involving the highway, but not a direct traffic violation, drunk in public on the highway. There were 3,126 arrests for this. Arrests for speeding led the list with 86,154. Reckless driving was next with 17,357 and operators’ and chauffeurs’ license violations third with 16,830. There were 11,105 for improper equipment and 2,647 for driving while intoxicated.
Man hours spent in connection with civil disturbances totalled 45,527.
