Sperryville Carnival

Opens Wednesday

Approximately a hundred units have already entered the Sperryville Fire Company parade which is scheduled for next Thursday night in connection with the annual carnival. The Sperryville carnival opens on Wednesday, July 21 and continues through the 24th, which is Saturday. Highlights of the four-night carnival will be a program of music Wednesday night; mammonth parade Thursday night; crowning of a queen Friday and awarding of prizes Saturday. The midway will hold a good selection of rides and food, prizes, games and fun will abound. The parade Thursday evening begins at 7 p.m. and will include fire and rescue units, majorettes, marching units, floats and many more. A box supper will be available following the parade. A coronation ceremony will be held Friday night for the lovely lady who is selected as queen of the carnival festivities. The grand prize, a 1971 Ford Maverick, and many more, will be given away Saturday night at the close of the four-night event. This volunteer organization invites the support and attendance of everyone at the annual fund raising carnival held on the carnival grounds on Route 211 just west of Sperryville.

Philmont Ranch

Bill Stokes and Bill Kilby of Sperryville left July 7 for a 22-day high adventure trip in the mountains of Philmont Scout Ranch and Explorer Base in northeastern New Mexico. They joined thirty Scouts and Explorers from the Shenandoah Area for the hWPv. ! ' The group traveled by bus to Philmont and visited points of interest enroute. At the 214 square mile ranch, the expedition will meet a ranger who will lead and train them on the trails for the first 3 days of their 10-day wilderness trek. On the Philmont trails they will participate in various programs offered in many mountain camps by trained staff members. Among these programs are earth science, fishing, gold panning, mining, rock climbing, burro packing.
