Nomination forms are available from extension agents throughout the state or from vocational agriculture teachers. To nominate a big tree, the finder need only to fill out the form, according to directions printed on the back of the form, and send it to Virginia Forests, Inc., 301 E. Franklin Street, Richmond, Va. 23219.
Virginia Forests, Inc., will receive and acknowledge all nominations. It will also screen them to separate the biggest from the big. When a big tree has been selected, the finder will be notified. Later he will be visited by a local forester to assist in verifying the dimensions of the big tree. Trees selected for the Virginia Social Register of Big Trees will be considered for a place in a national big tree register in Washington, D. C. Virginia already calims America’s biggest loblolly pine [apd the largest osage orange. Hie 128-foot loblolly pine in Dinwiddie County has a 16.5-foot girth. Hie 50-foot osage orange, with a 23-foot circumxerence, is located at Red Hill Plantation near Brookneal. The big tree search was initiated in 1970 as a 4-H and FFA Club project. But due to the interest it generated, this year the search has been opened to all persons.
Midgets Win Game
The Amissville Midget baseball team walked off with a victory Tuesday night when they downed Vint Hill with a 32-2 final score. Brooke Miller was the winning pitcher, striking out ten.
Amissville chalked up 21 hits and made four home runs. Homers were credited to Rickey Haines who made 2 and Danny Story and Kevin Adkins, one each.
The Midgets will travel to Remington Saturday and next Tuesday will meet Vint Hill at Vint Hill for the final season game.
