Eye Donations
At New High
More Virginians are pledging their eyes, on death, for use in corneal transplant operations than ever before in history, according to an announcement by R. Kenneth Hudgins, Executive Director of Old Dominion Eye Bank.
In the fiscal year ended June 30, the eye bank reported that 8,077 Virginians signed pledge cards promising the donation of their eyes for sight-restoring surgery. This total is almost three times the number of donor cards received by the eye bank in any previous year.
Major credit for the big surge in eye donation, Hudgins said, goes to the members of Virginia Lions Clubs, who conducted a major campaign in the past fiscal year to convince their fellow citizens to sign up as eye donors. Hudgins reported that over one thousand signed eve donor cards were turned in by one club, the Portsmouth, Va. Host Lions Club. Even more remarkable, said Hudgins, was the feat of the President of that club, Dr. Hal S. McCarter, in submitting over 500 pledges. Because the demand for eye tissue is still far greater than the supply, Hudgins said, the Lions Club of Virginia will continue to sign up eye donors in the new club year. Virginians willing to pledge their eyes for sight-restoring corneal transplants may get a pledge card from any member of a Lions Club or from Old Dominion Eye Bank, 408 North 12th Street, Richmond, Va. 23219.
