Apply water to your lawn during periods of drought. This may be expensive or impossible in some localities where water is scare or the rates are high. Your grass needs the equivalent of one inch of rain each week to promote good green growth.

Although it may cause you a bit of trouble to make changes, you should examine the grading around your home. The ground should slope down from the house to cause rain water to move away from the foundation.
In the years since your house was built, the ground may have gradually settled around it. The addition of a few inches of soil around the foundation may reduce the moisture problem in your basement, and improve the growth of the shrubs in the foundation planting.

Also, consider the use of ground covers in shady areas where grass will not grow. These low plants may also be useful around shrubs in the foundation planting. Once they have become established, ground covers may save you a lot of work and improve the appearance of your landscape.
The use of organic mulch is another way to improve the appearance of your home grounds, and reduce the labor of maintenance. Use sawdust, wood or bark chips, peat moss, pine needles or other similar materials around shrubs, and the flowers in your border plantings.
Black plastic mulch may be used around shrubs to conserve moisture and control weeds. If this is used be sure to cover it with round or crushed stone or a thin organic mulch. This is necessary to eliminate the shiny artificial surface which is objectionable in the landscape.
