Mrs. John Valentine of Cranford, N. J. is spending several weeks with her brother-in-law and sister, Dr. and Mrs. Carroll Quaintance. Last week Dr. Quaintance attended a meeting of the National Lawyers’ Association held at the Waldorf Hotel in New York.

Promotions Made
The promotion of three State Police sergeants to the recently created position of first sergeant, making a total of six, and the promotions of two troopers and an investigator to sergeant were announced today by Colonel H. W. Burgess, Superintendent of the Department. A first sergeant ranks between a sergeant and lieutenant and has the overall responsibility of supervising a large area with a sergeant as an assistant. The first three were appointed January 1, 1971. Salary range is from $10,032 to $12,000. Appointed first sergeant were Sergeants B. C. Nicodemus of Salem, R. A. Hiser of Lexington and C. S. Turner of Chesapeake. All three will remain in their present localities.
Sergeant Nicodemus was born in Woodstock; joined the Department in 1941; served as a trooper in Newport News, Shenandoah and Culpeper, and as a sergeant in Richmond and Salem.
Sergeant Hiser was born in Baltimore; entered the Department in 1950; served in Suffolk as
