BOOKS
(These are not new books by date of issue, but are recent contributions to the Library collection.' „
My Life as an Explorer by Sven Hedin - Sven Anders von Hedin (Hay-deen). 1865-1962, Swedish explorer and geographer, began in 1885 (at 20!) an important series of travels in Central Asia, particularly in the Transhimalayas, the Gobi desert, and Tibet of which he made the first detailed map (1908). Looks very interesting!
The Soong Sisters, by Emily Hahn - This is the story of three sisters who have exercised a profound influence upon the history of China and still do. Eling became Madame Kung, the wife of Kung Hsiang-hsi, Minister of Finance in Chiang’s government; Mayling is internationally known as Madame Chiang Kaishek; and Chingling is the widow if Dr. Sun Yat-sen. Theirs is a fascinating story which gives in a readable style a picture of what happened in China’s political world up to 1940, and describes the part played by each of the Soongs and the men they married.
War and Peace, by Leo Tolstoy'- This is the picture-story of Tolstoy’s “world’s greatest novel,” drawn from both, thebook and the motion picture. The story is an emotional experience and a vivid, fast-passed story. If you found the novel formidable in appearance but would like to know what it is about, this 120-page version, liberally illustrated with scenes from the motion picture starring Audrey Hepburn, Henry Fonda, and Mel Ferrer, is for you! Magnificent Destiny, by Paul I. Wellman - “a powerful novel about the long friendship and secret adventures of Andrew Jackson and Sam Houston - two litans of America’s most colorful era,” by the author of The Walls of Jericho, The Iron Mistress, and The Comancheros. (These are also on the Library’s shelves.) Library Hours: Wednesday and Friday, 1 to 5 p.m., Saturday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
