John S. Browning completed i lengthy career in banking when h< retired effective July 31 from hit position with Farmers anc Merchants National Bank, Flinl Hill Branch. His tenure of service in the Flint Hill establishment covered almost 48 years.
Mr. Browning says that his extensive service has not beer without its ups and downs for he began as assistant cashier of Flinl Hill National Bank in 1923, rose over the ensuing years tc president and was reduced agair to vice president recently. The demotion was in no way the resull of any inadequacies on his part but rather the outcome of subsequent mergers with larger firms.
“John S.” is a native of Flinl Hill, Rappahannock County Virginia, bom February 16, 1901. He attended grade school there and graduated from Flint Hill High School, a three-year facility. After passing an entrance examination at the University of Virginia he attended two years, from 1918 to 1920 enrolled in a premed course. When his father became ill, he returned home to manage the family farm and after three years of this “down-to-earth” job he embarked on his banking career in November 1923 at Flint Hill National. This bank had opened in 1920 with H. Ewing Wall as cashier and when he left for a position at Quantico with a newly established bank in December, much sooner than expected, John S. assumed the cashier’s position in 1924. At that time the only other employee was an elderly gentleman, J. W. Cary, who acted as assistant cashier, director and vice president.
