Mr. Browning was named to the Board of Directors in 1931 and jumped from cashier to president in 1962 following the death of Frank H. Cary. At the same time Mrs. Mary Latham took the role of cashier.
Flint Hill National Bank merged in 1963 with Citizens National Bank of Front Royal and with the merger came a step down in title for Mr, Browning to senior vice president. Mrs. Latham fell back to assistant cashier, the position which she presently retains.
Citizens National merged to become an affiliate of Farmers and Merchants National Bank of Winchester in 1966 and that network covers 14 banks and branches. Another step down in title ensued which made Mr. Browning vice president. Said he, “It was time to retire before they made me janitor.” It seemed that John S. had developed an acute eye for figures in his profession, therefore it was not surprising when he took the striking Miss Georgia Kay of Bowling Green, Caroline County Virginia for his bride on the last day of September 1938. Miss Kay spent a year in Rappahannock as Public Health Nurse before saying “I do.” They have two sons, John B. Browning who is adjustor in charge of the Charlottesville District of United States Fidelity and Guaranty Company of Baltimore, and Edgar K. Browning, a professor of economics at the University of Virginia. In essence this is a dual retirement for Mrs. Browning has retired after teaching ten years at the local high school.
