This gives the plant the opportunity to make as much growth and grain as possible, reduces the amount of moisture in the silage, and harvests the crop before lodging losses become too serious. Often the blighted plants are not as dry as they appear to be because of the juicy stalk. On the other hand, once the leaves are severely infected, drying can be very rapid and the chopped forage may quickly become too dry to ensile properly.
