harvesting time should be guided by the healthy plants rather than tfypse infected with SCLB. Chopping the healthy corn at the dough stage of grain maturity is probably the best guide. Allowing the healthy corn to reach the hard dough stage will often mean that the silage will be too dry to ensile properly due to the excessively dry blighted corn.

Feeding trials with the blighted silage have indicated that the blight organism is not harmful ^ livestock.

Because of the shortage of normal cytoplasm varieties, considerable acreage was planted to flint varieties in Virginia this year. Good stands were obtained from these varieties and they have proven to be resistant to SCLB thus far. When used for silage, it is suggested that they be harvested earlier than the dent varieties which farmers are accustomed to using in order to prevent the grain from maturing to the point where the hard seed coat may be a problem in livestock utilization. Ensile the flint corn when it is in the early dough stage rather than the hard dough, glaze stage guideline followed by dent varieties.
