to spring open, and back there among the things we had forgotten are treasures. Yes, treasures. There was the little child who came up to me on the street one day, taking my hand in her tiny one she said in her tiny lisping way, “Mister, I love you.” A boy was out walking his cocker spaniel. He came up to me, the spaniel, and was not satisfied till I took it up in my arms and petted it. Another time, I was walking near my home when I met a man with a BIG BULL DOG. Oh, that dog was a ferociuos beast; and his master looked about as mean. Just as we were abreast each other the dog lunged at me. To my pleasant surprise and his master’s chagrin, the dog started licking my hand and making little moaning sounds in his throat as if he had found a long lost friend. Just memories, should they be discarded? And, thank God, I have had human friends, too. Some are still on this plane, some of them have passed on. Of the latter I might say with Santayana,
“Why should we grieve, But that we merit not your holy death? We will not loiter long, your friends and I; Living you made it goodlier to live. Dead you make it easier to die.”
