Warm weather still lingers yet there are signs that Fall will soon do just that. Nights are much cooler than the days, creating ground fog and heavy dew. Days are shorter and we miscalculate the time left for outside chores after supper. Of this weather and time of year comes the plans and high hopes of the hunter.

The coming of Fall, I’m sure, brings a grand feeling to nearly everyone for one reason or another. It is the feelings of the hunter, however, that I know best, yet can probably explain the least. Many of my childhood memories have faded away and most will seldom, if ever, be brought back. Yet the memories of going to the squirrel woods in the early Fall as a 10 or 12-year-old are renewed each year. I would go with my brother. The first years I carried no gun, but experienced a great feeling just being along. Renewed again is the memory of the place, the slope of the woods, the tree we sat beside ahd leaned against, the old octagon barreled 22 special gump he used. It was a Winchester, a name you said with authority and as a youngster it was one of those words you savored. A few years later when I had been struck by wanderlust the word Montana did the same for me. And you know, in recent years, Rappahannock has felt mighty good rolling off the tongue. The point is there are so many things, just little things, which have meaning to only the individual, that , help create memories. Back to the squirrel woods - it was also the huge oaks and hickorys and the tiny “cuttings” on top of a stump. I was always impressed with my brother’s ability to see squirrels which I seldom saw until he brought them crashing down from the hickorys. I remember I never could sit still and I expect I got left at home at times for just that reason. I can well remember the Fall he told me 1 could use his .22 single shot. He told me to get some ammunition and insisted it would shoot “shots”. I best remember going to Mr. Moyers hardware store and buying a box of “22 shorts”, another word or phrase with a good taste.
