Does anyone remember taking all fifty cartridges out of a box of twenty-twos, inspecting each anfl then carefully putting each back, one up and one down? I do. They had grease on them then. And how about the nice feeling of that compact heft of a full box in your pocket? I'd shake my pocket up and down just to feel it drop to the bottom again.

For these memories I have my brother to thank and for the renewal of them each year I must gratefully thank September.

For those of you who share some of what I’ve tried to say and for those youngsters lucky enough to be going along the opportunities are almost upon us. Wednesday, Sept. 1 was opening day for squirrel hunters in Madison County. This season will continue through Sept. 15. Squirrel hunters in Rappahannock and Culpeper Counties will have a season from Oct. 1 through October 14. Six a day is the limit. Squirrels seem to be making a comeback after several lean years. Coon season opened on Sept. 1 in Culpeper. Rappahannock County with a new season this year will open on Oct. 1 and run through March 10. Though the season changed and it is not noted in the new game law pamphlet, the bag limit of 2 a day (or night) remains in effect in Rappahannock County. Probably of greatest interest to hunters right now is the upcoming dove season which opens this Saturday, Sept. 4, at 12 noon. Shooting hours are as last year, from 12 noon each day until sunset. This Sat., the 4th, sunset will be approximately 7:40 Daylight time. By Labor Day, Sept. 6, 7:35 will be time to quit. The big change this year in the Dove regulations is the bag limit. Hie limit is 12 daily. For most hunters this is a more realistic limit. For those who were taking 18 a day, 12 may seem to come fast but simple arithmetic shows that by stopping at 12 there will be more birds for your buddies and more for you another day.
