A deluge of rain which fell on the mountain top in Shenandoah National Park Sunday night, coursed down the slopes, saturated the earth and inundated the lower regions. The North Fork of the Thornton River overflowed its banks in many places and the rapidly rolling waters washed out portions of roads and bridges. Culverts and pipes were blocked and debris knocked down fences and cluttered bridges as it surged along the stream’s course. One family found it necessary to evacuate their home and another lost some animals to the forceful currents.
John Allen Atkins, who lives in Old Hollow, watched television until about eleven o’clock Sunday night and then went to bed. He was awakened by his wife an hour later who declared she heard rushing water. Mr. Atkins thought
