It has seemed to me all along that this problem must be attacked without bias, without respect to person, on a purely scientific basis after extensive laboratory and field study and that the two Departments, the Health Department and the Water Control Board must agree on what is and what is not polluting the water and the soil, that present laws and regulations must be enforced and whatever new ones are needed must be made to apply ; to the entire County.
I repeat, I’m 100 percent FOR clean water, but not at the private expense of the 24 widows and other I people already on Social Security whose incomes are minimal nor atj the expense of conscientious i people who put in septic systems, i We hoped then, and we still hope I that some Government assistance ' will be forthcoming and that some 1 engineer will come up with a plan ; that doesn’t cost Vi million dollars. 1 For the few people it would serve, that cost estimate was absolutely ABSURD. So we resisted. I believe &- many of the critics of SperryviUe’s action tried looking at our problem subjectively, putting the “shoe on their own foot” so to speak, they would be more sympathetic. It would be my hope that all citizens of the County who are truly concerned with protecting our environment and with making Rappahannock a clean, safe and naturally beautiful place to live would become more familiar with the complexities of Sperryville’s sewer problem and assist rather than condemn.
