It was the cost of the proposed system that we objected to. Practically everyone wanted then and still wants a solution to our problem, but no village of less than 100 families wants to assume a debt of $164,000 to start with and pay $600 to $800 to connect and $72.00 or more a year for sewage when they don’t even have adequate water. No family who has built a new home and put in an expensive septic system from $600 to $10,000 wants to have it condemned and have to pay the same connection fees and monthly rates as those who have been polluting the river for a generation or more. Let me ask you, Reader, If you have a septic tank and drain field laid out by the Health Department officer, do you want to be FORCED to connect to a questionable system? Wouldn’t you want to know the true picture? That’s the attitude I took as well as most of the people with approved septic tank systems. We said if septic systems are to be condemned in Sperryville so should outdoor privies be condemned, but there was no plan to do that, but those people were to be given Government loans to build on an addition to their house so they could put in a bath and get water to operate that bath from-God knows where!

that only in Sperryville are septic systems unsafe. But we were told that Sperryville soil is different from the soil in the rest of the County and failed in percolation tests. We asked for evidence of such tests. We asked why the Health officer was still approving yet additional septic systems in Sperryville if indeed the soil was not suitable. No answer.
