Mid-October is the time when all details of the 1972 set-aside program for feed grain probably will be announced, according to H. S. Barksdale, local farm program official.
Farmer inquiries are being received at the Rappahannock County Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service (ASCS) Office, he said. However he pointed out that many details are still in the decision-making process. Secretary of Agriculture Clifford M. Hardin has been consulting wih representatives of the agricultural community while the feed grain program is under consideration. Earlier in September, Secretary Hardin met with two national agricultural advisory committees to consider cotton and feed grain programs for next year. Some details of the 1972 setaside program for feed grain are already clear. Barley will be included in the 1972 program. Soybeans likely may be substituted for feed grains without loss of set-aside payments, and so may wheat. Although official notification cannot yet be sent, most farmers know what the feed grain base on their farm is. Farmers also know their farm conserving bases as the acreage they must keep in conserving uses, in addition to setaside acreage, if they participate in the programs.
