Dear Editor:
As the election of the County Board of Supervisors draws near, it is reassuring to discover that they are some individuals running for Supervisors who have the strength and the courage to express publicly their stand on issues that are vital to the welfare of this county, i.e. zoning, schools, conservation and environment and it is disappointing to find others still hiding behind that equivocal old political adage: “I am unable to answer . . . since the people in my district dictate the way I vote on issues.” This might have been good representation a hundred years ago when population was small and it was not hard to garnish the political wishes of one’s constituents. But now with the increases in population and the complexity of present day issues the time has come for our supervisors to be strong leaders, not just mouthpieces; thinking people whose opinions we know and respect, so that we have the choice to vote for the one we feel will represent our wishes. If we cannot do this we might as well refer every problem to the citizens of the county and rule by referendum. The Board of Supervisors was created to eliminate such a ponderous form of Government, and to run the county to the advantage of all the people. It has become necessary that each person running for supervisor tell the County his stand and feeling on the current issues.

Dear Editor: I was dismayed when I read what had to be the shortest letter to the Editor ever in your last edition. Mrs. Betty Coates wrote, .*‘3L Am unable to . answer the R.L.E.P. questionnaire since the people in my district dictate the way I vote on issues.” I have also heard that: in Wakefield District, Walter H. Williams, jr., Hampton District, Clarence E. Baldwin, Stonewall District, H. B. Wood, jr. either refused to respond or gave replies
