CHARLES MANUEL CAMPBELL, 32, of Alexandria and Amissville, was convicted on four charges, including one of first degree murder, in Rappahannock County Circuit Court Friday following a day and a half of testimony by a dozen witnesses. The 12-person jury recommended a total of 51 years in a penal institution for the crimes. The defendant was found guilty on the four charges and punishment totaling 51 years was set as follows: Murder, 30 years; robbery, 10 years; statutory burglary, 10 years and one year for grand larceny. The charges stemmed from the killing of John Swan Sutton on September 20, 1970 at Amissville.
Sutton was discovered bludgeoned to death behind Lombardy Lunch Room where he was sleeping after receiving permission to do so. The victim was robbed and the restaurant was broken into and burglarized.
Campbell remained unemotional through the long proceedings Thursday, when witnesses told of conversations with him in which he disclosed information leading to his arrest and conviction. His facial expression did not vary or change when the guilty (Turn to page 19)
School starts Aug. 28 PUBLIC SCHOOLS in Warren and Rappahannock Counties will begin the 1972-73 session on Monday, August 28. Classes on the first day will end at 2 p.m. with full day schedule beginning on August 29. Monday, September 4, will be observed as a holiday. A pre-school conference for all administrative and supervisory personnel will be held on August 17, and a meeting of professional personnel will be held at Warren County High School on Thursday, August 24. An orientation program for teachers new to the system has been arranged for Monday, August 21, and all teachers will begin work in their schools on August 22. Newcomers to the county are urged to register their school age children prior to August 22. □
