LAST YEAR, a Virginia agency issued a report :hat solemnly concluded that one-third — qr some such ridiculous portion — of all houses in Virginia were unfit for human habitation. You can believe that if you want to, but we don’t _ anci it’s not just because our love of Virginia blinds us to her faults. This year, a Virginia agency has issued a report that claims “one Virginian out of six lives in poverty.” You can believe that one, too, if you want to, but count us out again, please. Especially when the report compiled by the Virginia Employment Commission goes on to assert that “Virginia continues to have greater poverty than the nation as a whole, and that Rappahannock County is one of 18 rural counties in Virginia which “have more than double the average incidence of poverty in Virginia.”
CAN YOU FIGURE that one out? It apparently means that every third person you see in Rappahannock County is headed for the poor house or a bread line.
It would be our advice that no one get carried away with this information and attempt, in a wave of sudden charitable impulse, to press a dime in the emaciated hand of that third passerby.
