VIRGINIA’S State Water Control Board will make an independent review to determine if the controversial Salem Church Dam is actually needed.
The SWCB, which has been known chiefly for its work in fighting water pollution and in helping to get federal grants for sewage plants, recently was given new responsibilities for water supply programs.
Noman Cole, a Fairfax County resident who is chairman of the Water Board, said a recent state government reorganization had shifted responsibility for water supply to his agency.
“As of July , we began the process of reviewing the whole question of whether the Salem Church Dam should be built,” Cole said.
“We have an open mind on this — we may confirm or we may wind up disagreeing with previous recommendations that it be built,” he added.
He said he expects the staff analysis will take several months and then the ward will make a recommendation on the project.
