THE ISSUE was reopened last Thursday by the newest member of the Rappahannock Board of Supervisors, Col. E. P. (Pete) Luke. (He was appointed when Mrs. Betty Coates resigned to accept a teaching position in the Fauquier School System.)
Warden Jack Bruce had just appeared to discuss some possible claims. Bruce said he and the claimants agreed that a bear had probably killed a calf and some sheep. “The calf had been dragged sideways on the mountain, and they could see that no dog could have done that,” reported Bruce.
All of the Supervisors listened to this without comment, but Luke brought up the question of when Bruce had last been paid. Not since last March, it was stated. Luke wondered why it wouldn’t be wise to raise the dog tag fees to cover such things as the warden’s salary, and dog claims.
