Costly slopppiness
RAPPAHANNOCK COUNTY has arranged a convehient and effective trash collection and disposal system that needs only one more important ingredient to be the success it should be.
That ingredient: Citizen co-operation.
Last month, the county was charged an extra' $700, on top of the regular monthly charge of $1,800, because so much extra trash had to be picked up at the dump sites, which are located conveniently around the county. Seven hundred dollars extra! To clean up people’s messes!
Some of the mess is undoubtedly caused by “foreigners”; the Sheriff’s Department and the trash collection-company can document cases of trash-hauling interlopers from Culpeper and Front Royal.
But a whole lot of the mess, we’re afraid, is caused by Rappahannock residents. People are sloppy . Some people will drive up a pickup truck full of trash and simply dump it bn the ground. It’s easier that way, we suppose.
BUT IT SURE ISN’T EASIER on the pocketbook. Those careless and messy trash dumpers are having to pay for the basic and extra charges, too. The only thing wrong with that is that the people who are careful and considerate also wind up paying more, not to mention suffering the eyesores that are created.
If you don’t care what it looks like, at least consider the extra money. Otherwise, keep up the present trend and you can bet a carton of empty beer cans that taxes will go up.D
