We appreciate an opportunity to stress the need for supporting the need for a Recreation Center in the county, and urging all .concerned county residents to attend the public meeting on Tuesday, December 17 at the Elementary School Auditorium.

Rappahannock county is unique in that there are no year-round public, recreational facilities whatsoever within its boundaries. The only recreation activities available locally are horseback riding, fox hunting, skiing (but not this season), fishing, canoeing, and hiking. While some of these activities rank among the best in the state, they are not for everyone. The general lack of a broadbased year-round social and recreational program is of concern, and many school children have bitterly complained that “there’s nothing to do.” This lament is also echoed by our senior citizens. Many of our young adults have solved the problem by moving out of the county, making Rappahannock the only county in Planning District Nine to show a population loss during the past ten years.

Within the confines of this county, there is no theater, bowling alley, public tennis court, golf
