CHRISTMAS in Brazil comes in midsummer instead of during the winter. The tree may be decorated with ornaments similar to those used in the United States. However, in this tropical country it is usually an imitation pine. In some cases a native tree is stripped of its foliage and covered with paper tufts and small bird ornaments. Cotton is used on the branches for snow.
In Italy, where evergreen trees are not too plentiful, a popular Christmas decoration is a light, wooden, pyramidal frame, with three legs and several shelves. A manger scene is assembled at the base. The shelves above hold candy, fruit, or small presents. The whole structure is decorated with colored paper, and gilded pine cones, with candles at the corners of the shelves.□
