Mrs. Davis and Holschuh began their slide tour with the Lederer trail, the path that explorer John Lederer traced through Fauquier and Rappahannock in 1670. Mrs. Davis quoted from Lederer’s diary, noting that she and Holschuh had tried to track down the exact points he’d mentioned, such as the forks of the Rappahannock River and the place at which he stopped following the river and started cross country.
Lederer never reached the Shenandoah Valley, Mrs. Davis said. But, if he’d only crossed one more mountain, he would have reached what is now called Chester’s Gap, and could have seen into the valley, Mrs. Davis said. She noted that the Bicentennial hopes to have the Lederer trail found and marked throughout Rappahannock County, before 1976.
