THE DECORATING of Christmas trees gradually spread in pioneer America. Gilded egg cups, gay paper ornaments, small dolls and other items were attached to the evergreen branches. In the remote cabins of early settlers, handmade toys, pine cones, gingerbread cookies, or a new pair of knitted socks or mittens were used.
In Tidewater Virginia, Christmas customs from England dominated the celebration of the season. It was a time for parties, balls, hunts, and visiting relatives and friends. Gayly decorated trees were found in every home, covered with strings of popcorn, gilded nuts, globes of bright paper, and candles.
Christmas was unknown in Japan until about a century ago. It has now become a popular festive and religious holiday period. Christmas trees are decorated with small toys and dolls, fluted paper ornaments, small fans, and candies in gay wrappings.
