SPECIAL Unemployment Assistance (SUA) is a form of unemployment benefits for workers who are not eligible for regular unemployment insurance benefits or other such assistance under any state or federal law.
Persons should file a claim for SUA. Check with either the Winchester or Seven Corners offices to determine eligibility for SUA assistance.
The weekly amount and the total number of weeks that may be paid to an individual will be based on the individual’s earnings in the preceding 52 weeks. Benefits will range from $20 to $87 a week for up to 26 weeks.
The VEC will begin taking SUA claims as soon as possible to cover unemployment dating back to December 22, 1974. SUA goes into effect statewide whenever the national unemployment rate averages 6 percent for three months. It is possible to have an SUA period for a specific area within the state which has an unemployment rate of 6.5% for three months.
