Keim and Waldron O’Connor. Judges for the 5th grade contest, (in which 4th graders may enter if they wish,) are Mrs. Thomas Lewis, Mrs. D. Lyle Miller and Mrs. Waldron O’Connor. The judging job is a time-consuming one, demanding careful evaluating. It will involve the judges in reading four to five hundred reviews and in coming to consensus decisions as to which are to receive First, Second and Third place and Honorable Mention awards.
FOLLOWING IS one of the winners in last year’s contest:
Marion Eastham of Amissville, aged 13, in sixth grade of the Rappahannock County Elementary School, reviewed “Man O’ War” by Walter Farley and illustrated by Angie Draper. She wrote:
“This book is about Man O’ War, the greatest race horse the American Turf has ever known. He was foaled at nursery stud. As a yearling he was sold to Samuel Riddle. He developed into an outstanding two-year-old. Man O’ War won every race except one in his two-year-old career. He became a superb three-year-old and never lost a race. Man O’ War’s most exciting race was with John P. Grier. Grier was the only horse to stay with Man O’War for a mile, he was never the same afterward. Man O’ War became a great stallion and sired many dinners. ”□
