THIS YEAR’S survey will also seek to show the ravages of disease and insects in the forest as well as the extent of such inhibiting vegetation as honeysuckle, which is becoming more and more of a forest regeneration problem.
One of the most significant items to be determined will be the acreage of the several forest types, timber age classes and land use categories. This data is of the utmost importance in planning the best use of the forest resource in the years to come since the forest resource, unlike oil, mineral and coal resources, is renewable, said Custard.
The forest survey teams were oriented to the Virginia program on February 3 and began taking data in Surry and Southampton Counties on February 4. The State has been divided into five survey units—Coastal Plain, Southern Piedmont, Northern Piedmont, Northern Mountain, and Southern Mountain—and will be surveyed
