SPRING has brought with it a busy schedule for our girls and boys track teams and boys baseball. All are off to what looks like a super spring sport season.
The boys track team has participated in two meets so far. The. first meet was Wednesday, April 2 at Central High School where Rappahannock competed with Central and Luray teams. The Panthers came home with first place and the high score of the meet, 54 points.
Their second meet was the following Monday at Strasburg with Strasburg, and William Monroe as competitors. Rappahannock again took first place with a score of 79 compared to Strasburg’s 59 1/2 and WM’s 39. Way to go, Panthers!
Several school records were broken when Acy Frye took the high jump at 5’ 11”; Ray Grove, 100 yard dash in 10.15 seconds and Milton Fletcher’s triple was 42’ 9 3/4” and the 220 was done in 23.5 by Festus Clanagan. Jim Lum set a record over the low hurdles and the 880 relay team composed of Festus Clanagan, Fred Frye, James Freeman and Otis Jordan, also set a new school record.
Our girls track team is getting off to what appears to be a fine season also. They have competed in two meets; the first with Stonewall Jackson April 1 there with the locals taking second place. The second meet held at Central they vied with Central and Luray, and placed second. They made a superb showing in field events in the first meet and at Central the JV girls also took part. It looks as though we’ve got a really promising group of young track members to keep our eye on in the future. They brought home with them a whole page of new school records. Hurray for Panther Power!
