“VIRGINIA’S farmlands still take a beating from spring rains,’’ David N. Grimwood, State Conservationist for the USD A Soil Conservation Service, said in Richmond. “A great amount of progress has been made in the 40year history of the Soil Conservation Service,’’ Grimwood stated, “but farmers and other landonwers still lose large amounts of soil each year.”
The Soil Conservation Service was created 40 years ago this month on April 27, 1935». It was one of the first agencies in the nation to be concerned with the protection of our soil and water resources, Grimwood pointed out. “We’ve made a lot of progress in bringing about improved land use and in applying conservation measures to the land. We have a continuing job of adapting new technology to changing farming methods.”
GRIMWOOD is calling upon employees of his own agency, officials of Virginia’s soil and water conservation districts, and other farm leaders in Virginia to give high priority to helping farmers carry out planned conservation programs on their farms.
