DURING the war, Frank Huff was one of four men in an “Intelligence and Reconaissance patrol.” Huff’s job was driving a jeep. “We’d drive out front until we drew fire and then turn around and come back,” he said. As the war wound down, and the Russian • and the Allied fronts drew nearer, Huff said he and his fellow patrol members talked about the possibility of meeting the Russians. “But we knew it had been set up for the high-ranking officials to make that contact,” he said.
“We’d been out all the time for a couple of days and nights in a row, liberating the prison camps, disarming the Germans and directing the refugees who were running from the Russians to the American lines,” Huff said. “So we didn’t get the order that told us we were to go no farther than a five-mile radius from this little town.
