“SO WE took a bed sheet from ?«pme of the German refugees and we went through the town looking for a drug store. When we found the drug store, we broke in the glass, right next to the door knob. Then we went inside and mixed up some red and blue powder with water and blotted us out an American flag.”
Lieutenant William Robertson, who headed Huff’s patrol, climbed the spiral steps of a castle tower, on the banks of the Elbe. “When we got up there, he put his foot on the flag pole and let the flag hang put as far as it would go. He stood back behind the wall, with his foot on the pole,” Huff said. The Russians opened fire.
“Then we had to figure out some way to make them understand we were really the Americans, not the Germans trying to pull some stunt that had been tried before,” Huff said. “So Robertson told me to take the jeep and go back to one of the prison camps we’d liberated and get a Russian soldier.”
