Of people who spoke at a public hearing, crying “taxme!’’onequarter of those paid no real estate taxes. Another 25 per cent paid less than $400 per year, and another quarter between $400 and $600 per year. Of, in short, three quarters of those seeking more school funds paid in property taxes less than half the cost of educating one child. Of the remaining fourth, only one paid as high as $900 per year in real estate tax, still far from enough to meet the educational bill for a single child.
Another method of financing schools simply must be found. Citizens looking for something positive to do about preserving rural land uses, AND supporting education, could find few better causes to support. □
