Huff said his patrol was not the only one to make contact with the Russians. “Three other patrols made contact at different places along the river about the same time we did. But they got so boozed up on vodka, they couldn’t call back in. All they could get on the radio with them was just a mumble.”

The United States Army, in a publication issued just after the war, also noted that several patrols made contact with the Russians about the same time. But Huff’s patrol, led by Lt. Robertson, is believed to have been the first and, according to that Army publication, had the most interesting story to tell. □
