WE FEEL the same way about allowing smoking in the higher grades. Here is something which the highest medical councils in the land have acknowledged is. harmful to health, which shortens life and serves as a catalyst to cancer. Why should school officials condone smoking on school property? They might as well put in beer coolers or dispense even more controversial items if they’re willing to cave in so readily to the pressures of the smokers—who may be only a minority, anyway.
Standards have to be set somewhere, and why not start in elementary classrooms which ban “junk foods”? □
