“One mountain man was James P. Beckworth who was captured by Indians and became a chieftain of the tribe and lived with them for a long time. James Bridger was one of the most famous mountain men. His nickname was ‘Old Gabe.’ He discovered the Great Salt Lake. Joseph Meek was a fur trapper and an Oregon settler. Henry Fraeb was a mountain man for 15 years who built a fort on St. Vrains which is now southeastern Wyoming. He was killed in 1841 in a battle against the Indians. Thomas Fitzpatrick was one of General Asheley’s men and was regarded as one of the , greatest Mountain Men. Another mountain man was William Sherly Williams who was born on January, 3, 1787, in North Carolina.
