New studded

tire regulations

Studded tires may not be used legally in Virginia until October 15, Colonel H.W. Burgess, Superintendent of State Police, advises prospective users.

He added that they may be used until April 15, 1977, and again from October 15, 1977 until April 15, 1978. After that last date, further use will be up to the 1978 General Assembly, unless the 1977 Assembly makes a change. Formerly permissible dates were from November 1 until April 1 but the 1974 General Assembly changed the monthly dates to the present ones.

Burgess advised that Virginia law permits only studs which cannot project more than one sixteenth of an inch beyond tire treads when the tire is compressed and cannot cover more than three percent of a tire’s traction surface. They can only be used on vehicles the gross weights of which do not exceed 10,000 pounds.□
