needs four to six seconds and an elderly person may require as much as 10 seconds to cross a two-lane highway.
“Age and physical and mental ability determine the time needed to cross a street. Pedestrians must know their own abilities and be able to judge gaps in traffic. Motorists can help by adjusting their speed to give pedestrians plenty of time to cross,” said Hanna.
Additional safe walking rules cited by the safety official include: Before crossing any street, look left, then right, and then left again to see that no vehicles are coming; at busy intersections, watch for vehicles that are turning; when walking along streets and highways, travel on the side of the road facing the traffic.
“Pedestrian fatalities can be reduced in Virginia if pedestrians keep alert, wear bright clothing at night and use good judgement when crossing or walking along multilane highways,” concluded Hanna.

Cabins, mills, barns and large homes which were built in the eighteenth century are the subjects of a slide show scheduled for Tuesday, September 28, at the Flint Hill fire hall, beginning at 8 p.m. The fire company Ladies Auxiliary of that village will sponsor the event.
These slides taken by Capt. Howard Holschuh of Castleton show the architecture of the time and the skill of the stonemasons and carpenters of that period. Scenes are of all seasons and covered a two-year span. Mrs. Helen Holschuh narrates the slide show.
Admission for adults is 75 cents, and for children 25 cents.□
