The tremendous waste of energy has got to stop, and lacking any evidence of responsibility on the part of government or private industry, then it is the citizens who are going to have to take the lead.
TURNING down a thermostat to 65 does not represent a hardship, by any means. Driving a smaller, more economical car—and driving it only when it is absolutely necessary — doesn’t mean a dillution of our “standard of living.’’Refusing to brush teeth electrically, or carve turkeys electrically, or shine shoes electrically, do not constitute steps back toward the Stone Age. They represent steps toward sanity.
Often in history, the people are far ahead of their government, their “leaders,” in an awareness of what a problem is and what needs to be done to solve it. In the current “energy crisis,” the problem has already been defined, and demonstrated. The solution is equally clear — Use less!
