Prince Rudi jumped to the front momentarily as they passed the stands, but after the final turn to the stretch Alfred Knowles went to the bat and sent Mr. Jam flying past the others to win by a length and a half over Randy Waterman’s Prince Rudi. Kool Kake was third, followed by Bookbinder.
Three girls fell—the only spills of the day—in the Mount Salem ladies’ race which was won by a second-time starter, Meg Gardner. Felix Nuesch’s bold D. J.’s Nahar, Sarah Vorhies up, was the front runner from the start of the two mile timber race, with Patti Cassel keeping her Never Delay within striking distance.
Yeoman’s Duty in his first trip over timber on the leaders going downhill into the third last, but fell with owner Kathee Rengert upon landing. The same fence caused Patrice Skiffington and Ask the Price to part company.
Three were closely bunched going into the final fence where Never Delay and Patti Cassel, last year’s winning team both in this race and for the year, fell. Meg Gardner, well-known show rider and avid foxhunter, booted home her Sweet Smasher a length ahead of Jo Pat Murphy’s Muzzle Puzzle, ridden by Jennifer Youngman. Third was Connie Blevins on Eloping followed by Donna Truslow on Honey’s Moon in the mare’s second start over fences.
