tride Estremadura had their own duel, followed by David Semmes nursing along his new Super Sub, a replacement for August Acorn, who won this race three times.

Down the precipitous slope they rolled into the third last fence, Cousin Wes and Boca Bird taking it together. Boca Bird gained valuable lengths* on the left turn, but Mike duPont, riding throughout with great finesse, had the horse with the finishing lick. Estremadura took command at the sharp right turn into the stretch, winning by two lengths over Cousin Wes, much to the delight of his owner’s many local supporters. Boca Bird was another two lengths back, followed by Virginia Volunteer.

THE Durant Hill owner-rider hurdle race also had an upset victor. Winner of last year’s race and also of the First Colony series last year, Kool Kake with Kevin Palmer, riding, took the lead from the start, soon accompanied
