“In rural areas, the sheriff s department is usually the prime law enforcement agency,” said Jones. “The Uniform Crime Report shows that the majority of part one offenses (including murder, robbery, rape, assault, larceny and motor vehicle theft) are reported to and investigated by sheriffs departments.” He concluded that this gave rural sheriffs departments responsibility for crime prevention.
“It’s ridiculous to think that they souldn’t police,” Jones continued. He noted that the most logical way for deputies to get from point to point in the county was by motor vehicle and maintained that violation of law observed during travel time should be cited. “Emphasis is not placed on traffic control in any county that I’m aware of,” he said.
