Extra Work Load
“We need an extra deputy because of the increased work load,’’ said Hawkins. He reported that the sheriffs department “road men” were currently working between ten and 18 hours per day. Hawkins added that he didn’t think Davis was correct in his assertion that 70" per cent of department time was spent patrolling highways.
"As a neighbor of the jail, I think Deputy Hawkins’s statement about time is correct,” commented Jennings Hobson, in support of the Sheriffs request. Hobson was before the Board on fire and rescue squad business. “The Supervisors don’t support the fire departments to any great extent. We need all the help we can get,” he said. Since County funds are in short supply, Hobson asked that the Board transfer S100 from emergency supplies and equipment to fire and rescue. His request was unanimously approved.
The Supervisors then approved the final budgets for the school system, Public Assistance Department, library and multi-purpose and general construction. Approval of the General Fund budget was postponed until the July meeting by which time Luke said he expected word from the Compensation Board on requests from Rappahannock County.
