Jones reported that he had spent several hours searching through the Virginia Code for a definition of sheriffs department duties—without success. In his opinion, such duties are established by case law through the courts. He added that he knew of no juri&ictions where law violations were thrown out by judges because citations were written by sheriffs deputies who were acting beyond their jurisdiction.
According to Jones, the issues raised by George Davis on what is and isn’t sheriff department duty is not a common legal question. “To my knowledge, this is the first time it’s ever been brought up in the state.”
Prior to the remarks made by the Commonwealth Attorney, Buntin renewed his request for a full-time secretary and additional deputy. At last month’s Board meeting, the Supervisors voted to recommend to the State Compensation Board that neitljer position be authorized.
Buntiik noted that guideline/ of one deputy per 2,000 population established by the state allowed two and two-thirds deputies to Rappahannock. The county is currently served by only two full-time deputies. “I still feel it’s very essential to have another deputy,” said Buntin, basing his request on the increased work load of the sheriff’s department.
