Anniversary
The first meeting of Quakers in recent years in Rappahannock County occurred March 2, 1975 at the home of Lee and Diana Bird near Washington. Ten persons attended. Since then on most “First Dap” a few Friends have continued to meet, with interested visitors joining the group from time to time.
Moved some time ago to the waiting room of the Clinic in Washington, the Meeting until recently hadn’t grown. Regular attenders were Carroll and Arthalinda Quaintance, Mary Beth Martin and Allison, Sharon Kilpatrick, Douglas and Heather, and Lee and Diana Bird. Miriam Harris has been a frequent attender from the beginning.
Several months ago Friends from outside the county heard of the meeting and began to attend. Mrs. Sarah Nenner and Mrs. Gladys Chilton of Remington, Ellis and Daphne Williams of Criglersville, and Mr. and Mrs. Mark Treadway and daughter Heather of Warrenton. Additional local attenders are Barbara and Stanley Thompson of Sperryville. With these new members, the Meeting is reaching the point where it can begin to plan to apply to the Baltimore yearly Meeting for preparatory status, prior to becoming a recognized regular Meeting.
The Rappahannock Friends Meeting welcomes visitors and will seek to reach out to unknown Friends in the vicinity. The Meeting is an unprogramed period of meditation from 11:00-12:00 a.m. on Sundap. Persons interested in more information may call Diana Bird, 675-3263 or Sharon Kilpatrick, 987-8252.
