The Virginia Division of Forestry announced that effective March 1, the open air fire law goes into effect. The law specifies that between March 1 and May 15 of each year, it is unlawful to set fire to any brush, leaves, grass, debris, or field containing inflammable material capable of spreading fire, located in or within 300 feet of woodland or brushland.
The law is designed as a forest fire prevention measure. The majority of all fires in the Spring originate from some type of outdoor burning. During March, April, and early May, the condition of both forest fuels and weather are most favorable for the starting and spreading of outdoor fires. Forest fuels are mostly dead and dry, and weather systems bring high winds, high temperatures, and low relative humidity, all of which result in a constant fire hazard to fields, woodland, and brushland during these months.
